Persistence of Memory

Salvador Dali

IMG_9837.jpeg

Persistence of Memory is one of the most notable pieces of surrealism in history. The painting is by infamous painter Salvador Dali, a Spanish painter known for his "paranoiac-critical method," deliberately inducing psychotic hallucinations to inspire his art. He upheld that, "The difference between a madman and me is that I am not mad." Dalí enrolled at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid and explored art styles until he discovered the writing of Sigmund Freud, which caused him to pursue surrealism. The melting clocks contained within the painting display the relativity and inconsistency of time and space in life. The painting contains his famous painting of a face with melting clocks strewn about upon the person, a dresser, and a branch. This painting is the first piece of surrealism I ever saw and I loved it and surrealism is now one of my favorite kinds of art. It uses an unrealistic approach to display a real or at least psychologically real phenomenon. the piece was extremely fun and presented a challenge in conforming the clock to the shape necessary to not fall from a desk or the created box. I made the clock detachable to be able to be placed upon a desk solo or be with the dresser, if I were to redo the piece I would use a darker yellow on the clock to better convey the gold within the painting. The concept of 2d to 3d is extremely interesting and fun and I would like to attempt it again.
